What You Will Do

Prepare and dispense medications as prescribed by physician according to established policies, procedures, and protocols and within specified time frame:

• Intake of written and electronic prescriptions.
• Carefully and accurately measure/count and dispense medications as prescribed.
• Fill medication in an appropriate container.
• Verify patient insurance; process claims accordingly.
• Prepare and verify patient prescription labels – patient’s name, prescribing physician’s name, name of the medication, and dosage instructions.
• Compound various topical creams/ointments, as well as oral liquids.

Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies, procedures,
and protocols and within specified time frame:

• Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date.
• Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.
• Restocks medication dispensing areas.
• Prepackages medications in unit of use containers.
• Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations.

Participates in the quality improvement activities of the department:

• Completes all assigned medication storage area inspections in a timely manner.
• Conducts quality monitoring, collects data, and completes documentation, as assigned.
• Adheres to infection control protocols.
• Complies with all state and federal pharmacy regulations and requirements.
• Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well organized.
• Keeps pharmacy equipment clean.

Maintains competencies required for current position:

• Attends staff meetings.
• Participates in orientation, education, and training programs.
• Reviews literature and other materials as assigned.
• Completes all competency/skills assessment requirements annually or as directed.
• Maintains continuing education/professional growth and development.

Contributes to effective operation of the department:

• Assist patients/customers, answer questions.
• Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately.
• Ring all sales in the cash register and collect payment from patient.
• Generates reports, pick lists and labels as required.
• Answers the telephone, identifying self and department. Directs calls to appropriate personnel.
• Answers requests at the window in a timely manner.
• Organizes and prioritizes work assignments.
• Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately. Files in appropriate locations.
• Demonstrates good verbal and written communication including, but not limited to, patients, coworkers, and physicians.

What You Will Need

Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Possess current pharmacy technician registration in the State of New Mexico.
• Possess current National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT).
• Six (6) months pharmacy technician experience preferred.
• Successful completion of a formal Pharmacy Technician training course preferred.
